Germany lose keep and midfielder ahead of World Cup

Germany are going to be without keeper Rene Adler and midfielder Simon Rolfes for the World Cup because both are going under the knife.

Germany coach Joachim Loew says he was informed on Tuesday that the 26-year-old Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper won't be able to travel to South Africa as he is having surgery on a rib while Leverkusen midfielder Rolfes will be having surgery on his knee.

Loew said "of course we are very sorry that Rene now has to undergo an operation and so is out of the World Cup."

Loew is set to announce his 30-man World Cup squad on Thursday.
